Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwest slopes of Pirin Mountain. The town is famous for its natural pyramids- rock formation that resembles pyramids, obelisks, mushrooms and pinnacles and etc. the natural phenomenon was formed because of the long term erosive activity of the rivers of Pirin beside the town of Melnik.
The town itself is an architectural reserve.
|
In the past the town was a famous and important crossroad and spiritual centre- this can be felt from the specific style of the houses.
Melnik is also famous for its wine. It is said that “the wine is so thick that people can transport it in a cloth”. Tourists can see the huge wine barrels where the wine matures. Many of the wine cellars in the town offer wine tasting tours.
