The town of Smolyan is set in the picturesque gorge of Cherna River, in the most beautiful part of the Rhodopi Mountain, known as Mid Rhodopes. It is about 260 km south-east of Sofia, 103 km south of Plovdiv and 15 km south of Pamporovo Resort.
Smolyan is a regional administrative centre, rich in historical and cultural monuments. Here tourists can visit many museums and enjoy long walks in the parks of this peaceful town with beautiful nature.
Smolyan is famous with its Planetarium - the biggest one in Bulgaria, which offers unigue opportunity for observing the sky. Near the town is also the Chinar Nature Reserve (with sycamore tree 250-years old).
The climate in the region is mild. The summer is cool and calm; the average temperature being 19 degrees. The winter is long but mild, since it benefits by the Mediterranean climate. The winds are not strong and there is snow at about 120 and 170 days a year, that reaches up to 1-1,5 meters. The sunny days in the year are more than 200, which turns the Rhodope Mountain in one of the sunniest mountains in Europe.
At the moment, the administrative centre Smolyan is only 60 km by air from Aegean Sea and the Greek Sea coast. In 2005 the international road to Kavala, Greece will pass through Smolyan and the area will become an important stop on this international road.
For the convenience of the tourists, there are regular bus lines to Sofia, Plovdiv (every hour), Kurdzhali, Assenovgrad, Chepelare, Pamporovo (every hour) and to other smaller villages within the region.
