The town of Zlatograd is situated 60km away from Smolyan and only 5km south from the Greek border. Here the summer is hot, with temperatures around 38-40°C, while the winter is mild and often with no snow.
Zlatograd is a small town with numerous nice houses. Its citizens are friendly, humble and easy-going. As most of the Rhodopa towns, it is situated along the river valley of Varbitsa and is close to the healing thermal water spring in Erma village.
Zlatograd has preserved about 60 old houses from the Revival period, characterized with rounded white chimneys and walls. Here was built the first church in the Rhodopa Mountain. Now in the old town of Zlatograd is build an ethnographic areal complex, which offers accommodation and stroll along the numerous small workshops, museum, mechanas and cafes, which reveal the way people lived here a century ago.
Zlatograd is the birhplace of the famous national hero Deljo haidutin, for whom is written the song performed by Valja Balkanska. Now the song flies with the space station "Voyager" and glorifies Bulgaria and the spirit of the Rhodopes. |
