Tourism, renewables most popular for rural development

More than 70 percent of the projects seeking financing under Bulgaria’s Rural Development Proramme 2007-2013 involve renewable energy generation and tourism.
Consultants drawing up candidates’ business plans say the trend to opt for mostly family hotels and photovoltaic (PV) power plants continues through June when the latest application process began.
The programme provides funding also for furniture manufacture, light machine building, health care, social activities, transport services, consultation and business services. All of these are hardly generating any interest.

According to data by State Fund Agriculture, renewable energy projects account for 37.8 percent of all applications, while tourism projects make another 33.2 percent.
The bulk of the clean energy project applications are concentrated in Smolyan and Sliven. The most attractive technologies include PV and hydro power development.
“Up till now, no interest has been expressed in the construction of wind farms or biogas facilities,” State Fund Agriculture said.
The Bulgarian Association of EU Programmes Consultants expects that renewables and tourism will continue to spark strong interest until the budget allocation is depleted.
